1912 – 2012 Medina Lake Dam Centennial Celebration

The Society has been designated by resolution as the official sponsor for the Centennial by the Medina and Bandera County Historical Commissions and the Bexar-Medina-Atascosa Water Control and Improvement District. Many special events, listed below, are planned in Mico and in Lakehills (see event map below). Events will begin at 10am in Mico, adjacent to the Medina Dam. The Society will sell official souvenir items, including the Centennial Poster created by local artist Emilee Mason (see additional information below). A special edition postcard with commemorative postage cancellation will also be available for purchase.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
10am – 11am Opening Ceremony at the Dam Bedrock Resort Property in Mico, 6750 CR 271
Ft Sam Houston’s own 323rd US Army Band kicks off the Celebration with opening music. Dignitaries representing the 3 countries of Great Britain, Mexico and the United States, all instrumental in the building of the Medina Dam, will address the community and visitors from the decks overlooking the dam at the Bedrock Resort property. Texas State, County and Local representatives will also be on hand to welcome you. Bring your lawn chairs and pick your own best view!
11am – 11:15am Memorial to the Workers Bedrock Resort in Mico
A special US Army Honor Guard from Ft Sam Houston will conduct the flag ceremony, followed by a brief speech commemorating the workers who gave their lives during the construction of the Medina Dam. A wreath will be laid upon the waters of the lake, in the shadow of the Dam, and a moment of silence will reflect upon their sacrifice.
11am – 3pm Mico VFD Centennial Community BBQ Mico VFD Main Station on CR 271
Come help the official barbecuers for the Medina Lake Dam Centennial Celebration inaugurate their brand new fire station. Enjoy a delightful brisket or chicken dinner with all the trimmings! Help us support our local Volunteer Fire Department!
12pm – 4pm Water Conservation and Photography Exhibits Lakehills Civic Center, 11225 Park Rd 37
The importance of water conservation by all Texas residents, agencies, agricultural and recreational users will be featured in exhibits and displays by the Bexar/Medina/Atascosa Water Control and Improvement District and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance .
Representatives from the Bandera and Medina County Historical Commissions will also be on hand to discuss their part in the preservation of the history of LakePlex, including local family genealogy and cemeteries.
A unique photography exhibit will show the history and significance of Medina Dam and Lake through 100 beautifully displayed photographs covering the 100 year period of its existence.
“Ripples From Medina Lake” by Cyril M. Kuehne, the oldest known book detailing the history of the area before, during and after the building of the Dam will be on sale from the Castroville Chamber of Commerce and the Castro Colonies Historical Society.
1pm – 1:30pm Water Ski Exhibition -Wallys WaterSports & Ski School Mico: views from public access areas
Come watch this beautiful and amazing water ski exhibition from any of the public access areas ( most near the marinas) in Mico. Starting in the shadow of the Medina Dam, skiers will perform aerial stunts, jumps and tower manuevers.
12pm – 1pm The History of Medina Dam and Lake – Merry Langlinais Mico, Bedrock Resort, 6750 CR 271
Noted local historian, Merry Langlanais, with the Bandera County Historical Commission will give a detailed historical lecture featuring a special slide show with amazing, beautiful photographs of the construction of the Medina Dam. If you’ve ever wondered about the who, what, where, when and why of this incredible moment in Texas history, don’t miss this! Given inside the Bedrock Resort, a museum all on its own. It’s walls covered in wooden framed, old newspaper clippings from the beginning of the lake and one of the most complete collections of antique outboard engines you’ve ever seen – most utilized on Medina Lake! Seating is limited – reservations are highly reccommended.
2:30pm – 3:30pm Archaeology of the Medina River Valley Lakehills Civic Center, 11225 Pk Rd 37
Renown author, Dr.Thomas R Hester, Ph.D. ,Professor of Anthropology, emeritus The University of Texas at Austin will give an informative and interesting lecture and slide show presentation on the indigenous peoples of the Medina River Valley. Dr Hester will display many ancient tools and artifacts. A must for anybody interested in the Indian tribes that occupied this area before the arrival of European settlers. His book, “Stone Artifacts and Ancient Tools of Texas Indians” will be available. Unassigned seating is limited – reservations are highly recommended.
12pm – 4pm The Bandera Cattle Company Gunfighters Lakehills Civic Center & Bedrock Resort
Come watch these talented re-enactors put on a daring display of sidearm and rifle exhibitions, complete with saloon girls! You might even see a longhorn steer or a chuck wagon get drawn into the fray. Listen to old west storytellers. You will be invited to pose with the Gunfighters and take your own photos after the shows.
2pm – 2:30pm Underwater Fountain Display – Dive World of San Antonio Joe’s Place Marina, 200 CR 2620, Mico
Choreographed fountains of water spray up into the air, a delightful display of underwater engineering by talented scuba divers. Fun and interesting to watch – It leaves you wondering, how did they do that? This event is contingent upon water level and will be viewable from most public access areas in Mico, but best viewed from the Joe’s Place Marina property.
7:30 (Dusk) – 9pm Outdoor Showing of “Gone Fishing” Bedrock Resort, Mico, 6750 CR 271
Come watch this hilarious, quintessential lake movie featuring Joe Pesci. Enjoy an evening with family and friends out under the stars with your blankets or lawn chairs. Seating is limited- reservations are highly reccommended.
7pm – 9pm “The Medina Lake Dam Jam” – A Live Music Concert Lakehills Civic Center, 11225 Pk Rd 37
The Rhythm and Rhymes Reunion Bands – A supreme line up of Texas talents including Doug Fesler, Kathy Bates, Woody Woods, Allan Chapman, Kristi Morales, Spider Johnson, Rodney Joe Smith, Carole Pachecano. Come listen to some toe-tapping, hand clapping country and acoustic music. Have you ever seen (and heard) someone play a washboard ?! Or a saw?!
Also in the line-up, the Vinyl 45’s! Rousing tunes from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Come dance the night away to the music of a by-gone era. Doo-wop, Doo-wop, Doo-wop…In the still of the night…

PRESS RELEASE 2/27/12 – Last year, the MLPS held a poster contest in order to select an official artwork to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the completion of Medina Lake Dam. Local area art students were invited to enter, and five winners were named; the grand prize winner is featured here, and was selected to be the official Centennial poster.
The entry of Emilee Mason, a Bandera Middle School art student, was selected as the grand prize winner. Please join us in congratulating Emilee Mason, and all the students who participated in this fun and exciting community event!
The limited edition, signed and numbered Medina Lake Dam Official Centennial posters are destined to become a collectors item and will be on sale for $25 each. Unsigned/numbered posters will also be available for $10 and all proceeds benefit the MLPS Medina Lake Dam Centennial Celebration be held on August 25th, 2012.
